Scholarship Addresses Long Island’s Growing Demand for Skilled Trade Professionals

Mangano Family Funeral Homes proudly announces the establishment of the Barbara Mangano Vocational Trade Grant Award Scholarship, a meaningful initiative created by funeral home president Sal Mangano in honor of his mother’s enduring legacy of service, leadership, and dedication to the Deer Park community.

Administered in partnership with the Constantino Brumidi Lodge #2211, the scholarship, established in 2026, will support individuals pursuing careers in vocational and trade professions, fields that are increasingly vital to the economic strength and future of Long Island. Awardees must be of Italian descent through his/her mother or father and will have demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing in their chosen vocation, along with a dedication to community involvement and personal growth.

Barbara Mangano was a trailblazer and pillar of the community. As the first female licensed funeral director in Suffolk County, she broke barriers in a traditionally male-dominated profession while exemplifying compassion, professionalism, and dedication. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Barbara was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Sons of Italy and a deeply devoted member of the Deer Park community, where her kindness and generosity left a lasting impact.

“Creating this scholarship in my mother’s name is both a tribute to her legacy and an investment in the future,” said Sal Mangano, President of Mangano Family Funeral Homes. “She believed in hard work, dignity, and service to others. Supporting young people from Italian descent who are pursuing meaningful careers in the trades reflects those same values.”

Sal Mangano, who currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Constantino Brumidi Lodge #2211 of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, emphasized the importance of the scholarship’s mission. As industries across Long Island face a growing demand for skilled professionals, the grant aims to empower individuals committed to building careers in essential trades and vocational fields.

The Barbara Mangano Vocational Trade Grant Award Scholarship reflects both a personal tribute and a broader commitment to workforce development and supporting the next generation of skilled professionals.
